c. Explain how technological developments, including the cotton gin and railroads, had an impact on Georgia’s growth.
• New Technology Leads to Georgia Growth and Expansion
• There were Two main technological developments that helped Ga grow rapidly
– Cotton Gin (Picture)
– Railroads (Map 1850 through 1860) (Map 1910) (Today)
• Cotton Gin
• Invented by Eli Whitney in 1793
• The Gin separated the seeds from the cotton fiber (which required long hours to do by hand).
• It allowed Ga to plant more cotton since now they had a way to remove the seeds from the cotton quickly.
• It allowed Cotton to become the “King” crop grown in Ga
• Positive effects-
– Strengthened Ga Economy
– Helped lead to the development of Ga Land and the establishment of major towns
• Negative effects
– Encouraged Large Plantations with increased slave labor
– Displace mote Indians and pushed them off their land
• Railroads
• First "roads" into the interior regions of GA were rivers
• Then REAL Roads were built to get to the rivers better and began to link towns to others with no rivers systems.
• Railroads came last and offered reliable transportation for people and goods to cities and markets. They connected interior towns with River and Seaport Cities
Where Railroads ended or where two railroads met Towns were usually created. One such town was known as “Terminus” OR better known today as “Atlanta”
