• There were Strict land regulations and restrictions
– Each head of a (charity) family would be given 50 acres of land – 45 outside the city to farm and 5 inside the city on which to live.
– Paying families got 50 acres + 50 more for each servant up to 500 acres
– Only males could inherit the land
• No rum or hard liquor was allowed in the colony
• No Slaves were allowed BUT indentured servants were okay
– These rules would later cause major problems in the colony
• Rules for the Trustees

• Could not own land
• Could not hold public office
• Could not Receive a salary for their work
– Ga was the Only colony to be run by trustees
• Ga Development under Trustee Rule
• GA did not do well at first
• Settlers were upset and did not like rules on the land restrictions, trade with Indians, or slavery
• New immigrants brought change
• Salzburgers
• These people were originally from the Salzburg district of Germany who fled from Catholic persecution.
• They settled land near on the Savannah River above the town of Savannah. Their First town Ebenezer failed due to swampy land and bad water so they moved it to higher ground nearby and renamed the town New Ebenezer.
• They were very hardworking and against alcohol and slavery.
• Salzburg District Germany
• Highland Scots
• They were originally from Scotland
• They were a hard working, hard drinking clannish (very strong family and community bonds) group who did not like the alcohol rule
• They built forts around Darien Ga and helped defend the colony against Spanish attacks from Florida
• They liked the slavery law because they had a long history of trouble being slaves in the past. They believed that each man should work for their stuff and slavery would make people lazy
• Malcontents
• These were people who lived in the colony but were upset with the way things were being done.
• They wanted slaves so they could work the land better
• They wanted alcohol not only to drink but also for trade with the Indians
• They wanted more land and better land that what they had.
• They believed the Indians had no rights to the land
• In general they were a bunch of complainers that eventually get their way and have the rules of Ga changed until Royal Governors were sent by the king to control the colony.
• Spanish Threat from Florida
• Did not like England for religious as well as Political and Economic reasons
• Spain encouraged Indian attacks and for slaves to escape to Florida where they would be free after converting to Catholicism
• Spain even had a black militia and a black fort called Ft Mose
• When England declared war on Spain in 1739, Oglethorpe attacked Florida
• Oglethorpe was after St. Augustine (the largest Spanish fort and city)
• He was defeated by the black militia and other Spanish soldiers at Fort Mose and turned back to GA
• Two years later Spain launched it’s own attack which ended an English victory at the Battle of Bloody Marsh. After this Battle, Spain did not attack the colony again.
• War ended with little resolved in the New World
