• a. Explain the importance of James Oglethorpe, the Charter of 1732, reasons for settlement (charity, economics, and defense), Tomochichi, Mary Musgrove,and the city of Savannah.

• Conditions in England
– Homeless people
– high unemployment rate
– poor economy
– prisons full of debtors
• Future hope was in the colonies of the New World
James Edward Oglethorpe
• He was a young member of Parliament which is the ruling body of England (much like our congress)
• He served on the Jails Committee whose job was to oversee the prison system. He had an ambitious plan to reform (redo) the prison system.
• He and a friend, John Percival, went to see King George II of England to ask for a land grant (piece of land given to them) to establish a colony of debtors
• The colony would be named Georgia after the King

Ga was a grand Social Experiment
• Founded for 4 reasons/purposes for GA
– Charity –place where good prisoners (those in jail for reasons of debt)would be given a 2nd chance
– Economics/Profit – to support mercantilism
– Defense – to protect South Carolina from attacks by Spanish Florida
– Religion – To advance the Protestant Religion
THE REALITY of Georgia
- Charity - GA had toughest entry policy of any colony and No debtors came were released to come to GA
- Economics/Profit - It Did help England financially (somewhat) Ga did export some silk
- Defense - Main reason it fulfilled was as a buffer (protection) for South Carolina
- Religion - Ga did advance the Protestant Religion but other religions were allowed in Ga also.
Charter of 1732
• A charter is a paper guaranteeing someone property.
• King George II gave Oglethorpe a charter that
– granted them the land south of the Savannah and north of the Altamaha Rivers and in a line that reached all the way to the Pacific Coast (Ga Land in Original Charter)
• The ship ANNE set sail from England in late November 1732 bound for the New World
• 57 days after leaving England the ship ANNE arrived in Charlestown, S.C. and the colonists rested while Oglethorpe and some others searched for a spot to call home.
• Settled on a site 18 miles up the Savannah River at a place known as Yamacraw Bluff
• February 12, 1733 is landing date (GA Day)
Savannah
- Was the first English settlement in Ga.
- Was laid out in a design of squares with commons areas every few sqaures for churches and public
building to promote unity within the town

Important people to Know
– Tomochichi – local Indian chief that was friends with Oglethorpe and helped the settlers
– Tooanahowi – Tomochichi’s nephew who took over the tribe after Tomochichi’s death. He also remained friends with the settlers.
- John and Mary Musgrove – local Indian traders who served as interpreters for Oglethorpe. Mary was part Creek so she spoke both the Muskogee and English language
