  c. Explain reasons for European exploration and settlement of North America,with emphasis on the interests of the French, Spanish, and British in the southeastern area

Spanish Claims  (MAP)

Hernando De Soto explored area first

Established the first successful colony (St. Augustine) in present day Florida

Sought to tame natives through religion

Sought mainly to find Gold like they had found in Mexico and South America

Never made a big move to settle the area with citizens (people)

 

French Claims  (MAP)

Second nation to visit the area

Settled a large force of Huguenots (French protestants) near present day Jacksonville, Fla.

Built the first fort in North America (Fort Caroline)

Abandoned fort due to famine and sickness

Later settled further north (Canada) for fur Trade and further west along the Mississippi but claimed western  part of GA

English Claims  (MAP)

Last to lay a claim to this area

Established first colony in present day Virginia

Brought people in to build homes and settle the land

Settled much of the Eastern Coastline of North America

Wanted to use new land to further the policy of mercantilism – a trade policy in which colonies produce raw materials for the mother country and the mother country makes the raw material into a finished product for sale back to the colony as well as other countries.

Example: Cotton grown in the colonies was shipped to Great Britain and made into cloth which was then brought back to the colonies to be sold
