  b. Evaluate the impact of European contact on Native American cultures; include
Spanish missions along the barrier islands, and the explorations of Hernando
De Soto.

European Contact

In 1540, Hernando De Soto explored the Southeastern part of North America laying claim to land that would later become GA

He was cruel to the Indians that he met and often enslaved or killed them. Often, he and his soldiers ate all the food available in the village forcing the Indians into starvation.

Many Indians died due to disease spread by contact with the Europeans rather than from war.

De Soto introduced the Indians to many new items not available to them such as metal knives, guns, blankets, metal cookware, mirrors, and horses.

These items became valuable “trade items” between the Indians and European settlers later.

How does this picture illustrate the changes that were coming to the Indian Population?

De Soto's Route

Spanish Settlement

1565 Spain entered the land known as Guale (modern day southeast GA) and established missions (Spanish Churches) to convert the local Indians to Christianity

The Indians welcomed the “trade items” but did not really like the people living there.

Most of the missions were built along the coast and on the barrier islands of GA

Garrisons ( units of Spanish soldiers) were left behind to protect the Priests and the missions from Indians

Later, during the war with England, most of these missions were abandoned and the soldiers pulled back into Spanish Florida
