4 Different Pre-historical Georgia Cultures or Traditions

Paleo-Indian

Archaic

Woodland

Mississippian

Paleo-Indian Period

    Earliest known Indian Group

    Extremely Primitive Living

    Lived in small groups

Depended on animals for their survival

Constantly moving to follow animal herds

    No Stable or Permanent homes

    Usually dead by age 30

Archaic Period

    8,000 – 1,000 B.C.

Slightly more advanced than Paleo Indians

Lived in slightly larger family groups

Depended on small game (animals such as deer, squirrels, birds), wild fruit, vegetables         and shellfish for survival

    More stable homes

Woodland Period

    1,000 B.C. – 1,000 A.D.

    Had Very stable home

    Depended less on game animals

    Invented bow and arrow

    Extensive trade with other Tribes

    Were known as Moundbuilders
        2 Examples of mounds:
            Effigy Mound – Rock Eagle

            Temple Mounds - Kolomoki,
                                              Etowah,
                                              Ocmulgee

Mississippian Period

    A.D. 1,000 – 1600

    Most advanced culture

    Extensive farming

    Large permanent settlements with chiefdoms

Villages protected by palisades (walls) or moats (ditches)

These were the Indians that met Hernando de Soto when he explored Ga for Spain

Changes

As each culture learned new technology (weapons, farming), they became advanced in         their lifestyle

The Earlier cultures hoped only to survive and had no need for organized towns,                     government, or religion but as the food sources changed and led to more stable lives,             each culture advanced and its need for civic organization increased.

This can be seen by the changes made such as new weapons invented, better and more         permanent homes, villages with governmental structure and protection

With better technology, Leisure time increased which led to the invention of games, art,         and other activities

Religious beliefs and practices increased as evidenced by the ceremonial mounds built for     worship and burial practices.
